Enthusiasts wearing period American uniforms gathered early in the morning in Karlín, in the yard of Regina, from where they set out for Kampa. There they immediately attracted the attention of tourists as well as of a security guard of the Police of the Czech Republic carefully guarding the US Embassy, where the convoy intended to drive. Pyrotechnists therefore inspected the vehicles, their chassis, and engines. However, at the end the cars became a prey of tourists, especially of those from the USA who took almost a childlike pleasure in taking pictures of themselves in jeeps.
Weeklong Celebrations
Finally, the convoy reached the US Embassy where the representatives of the militarists were admitted by the ambassador. Then the veterans drove off to main squares of the metropolis: Václavské, Staroměstské, and Hradčanské square. The culmination of their journey, which was a part of project called ‘Learn the history with Czech Radio‘, was driving through Plzeň and Domažlice. 8th May was already twelfth time when the military historical vehicles went to Velichovky to commemorate the American negotiation at the headquarters of the German Army ‘Mitte’. The participants met a day before in Hořice, where an exhibition of the vehicles took place. In Velichovky they struck a battle with a German garrison. Although a historical fiction, the battle offered an interesting spectacle.
Prague also celebrated an anniversary of the Prague uprising. On 3rd May, the deputy minister of defence, Pavel Mašek, admitted the participants of Czech and Prague uprising. Furthermore, on 5th May a reverent act was held next to Barikádníků bridge in attendance of the deputy Mayor, Markéta Reedová, and the representatives of CSBS (Association of Czech Fighters for Freedom).
