From art craft to design

Archaeological discoveries provide proof that many years in the past people not only made items that were labour saving but they were also decorating them. This decoration is to be found not only on jewellery but also on daily items of use such as dishes, weapons, tools etc. The quality of decorations was down to the skills of a particular producer.

It wasn't only vanity but also the need to distinguish between two axes or ceramic bowls for example that led the makers hand into coming up with new shapes and patterns. Various creative activities that are generally called crafts gradually evolved. On top of that, artistic crafts were added to the list of activities conducted by humans. So for example a skilful smith was not only making horseshoes but also decorative bells, interesting keys, arms and weapons that were later skilfully decorated by a forger. A coiner would design and make coins, a baker baked rolls and fancy pastry or gingerbread in the shape of heart and a potter was able to make a simple plate as well as a decorative cup that could displayed on a shelf.

These days such activities belong to a specialised field called design and has a broad spectrum of uses. Primarily it concerns the connection of form and functionality; secondarily an original, atypical or environmentally friendly piece should serve its owner and have added functionality as well. Design is applied in many fields and therefore it is divided into industrial, graphic, fashion or lately also web, garden and floristic design.

From the outside it concerns a style, a way in which we present ourselves and our surrounding to the others. Internally it is also about the way we experience, express ourselves and our ideas about life. In a broad sense everyone can be a designer because everyone forms his or her personality and surrounding. On the other hand, there are certain principles in the field of design the observation of which lead to a desired outcome. Therefore it is interesting to look at what is currently going on among designers and where it is heading. This is why we decided to provide up-to date information, tips and addresses that we think you should know about as well as interviews with personalities from the world of creativity and practicality.

René Šulc is a thirty year old designer who graduated in design from the Prague’s Academy of Arts Architecture and Design - Department of design in Zlín. In that time he spent two years studying with Prof. Jiří Pelcl in the Atelier of Architecture and Design. He took an interest in the design of lamps, furniture, product design, and the design of medical aids. His sofa “Chaise-longue” was included in the Project “Česká sto - 100 ikon českého designu” (Czech Hundred – 100 Icons of Czech Design)

Denisa Nová’s collection was selected for the fashion show that was the ceremonial opening of the 10th Year of Designblok, now a major design event. More than two hundred designers are introducing their work in three neighbouring localities, the event finishes on Sunday.

The international biennale exhibition of one hundred and twenty designer projects and artefacts is on display in the Hungarian capital, Budapest, from today for one month. The collection was displayed in Prague last spring.
