The Mutating Medium does not focus on the surviving photographic genres, on the contrary it explores photography in its new mutations often beyond its existing borders. The exhibition includes works by Ivan Pinkava, Zbyňek Baladrán, Jiří Thýn (his rose on the invitation can be seen throughout Prague), Milena Dopitová, Jiří Kovanda, Veronika Bromová and many others.
Twenty-year-old journey beyond the borders of photography
“The works are well able to exist in an environment of normal galleries without any ‘photographic crutches’. At the same time, these works sometimes go so far that they seem to have nothing in common with photography. Sometimes, the authors only make use of photographic thinking. For instance, they think about the process of technical display, about the definition of modern photography or how photography changed with the arrival of digital media,” said the curator of the exhibition, Pavel Vančát.
Media Intertwined
Ever since the 1990’s, the use of photography in present day art has been significantly democratised. Cameras have become both technically and financially accessible to a wide spectrum of artists. Photography is no longer isolated by its technical basis. Photography adopts the language of poetry, sociology, psychology and even mass-media. The exhibition portrays its gradual changes: from post modern exaggeration and conceptual approaches of the 1990’s to the most recent works exploring the very basis of photographic media.
The exhibition will be held until 1st May. For more information visit the gallery’s website at Galerie Rudolfinum.
