Cunningham has all the attributes of a successful author and is one of the most widely discussed contemporary novelists in America. His first novel was entitled Golden States, however, literary critics did not accept him until he published a short story called White Angel, which made it into the collection of the best American short stories. The novel that brought Cunningham the greatest success was The Hours, which was then made into a film of the same name by Stephan Daldry, with Nicole Kidman in the role of Virginia Woolf.
