You can taste the traditional Mayor’s Christmas Eve soup in Old Town Square on Christmas Eve at 11 a.m. As in previous years, the soup will be served steaming hot to citizens by Prague's Mayor, who has already found many people that are glad to lend him a helping hand.
This year there is one further addition to tradition though. “We decided to offer the soup on Wenceslas Square as well,” said Zuzana Uhlíková from the Taiko company, which is in charge of Christmas markets on both squares. On Wenceslas Square, the soup will be served by the representatives of Prague 1 City Hall, and the event will start at 11 a.m. as well.
What is it going to be like?
In previous years, the soup has been prepared by various renowned companies. Two years ago, Praguers tasted soup prepared by chefs from the Hilton Hotel and last year it was prepared in Pizza Colloseum. This year we will sup delicious soup made by another highly praised company, Catering Vyšehrad. We have already managed to uncover the basics ingredients of the recipe and can therefore reveal that it is going to be a strong nutritious broth made from fish heads, meat and vegetables, thickened by milt, fish eggs, butter roux and sprinkled with crutons. The much coveted secret, however, dwells in the well-guarded combination of spices. It is therefore understandable that nobody wanted to disclose if the soup will have any garlic and if so, how much of it, if chefs opted for the delicious aroma of nutmeg or if we will be able to discern any other spices. They also kept quiet about whether the soup will be matured or served fresh from the stove. Every gourmet would tell you that the soup is better if left to day though. Anyway, based on previous experience we can say with a high degree of certainty that it is going to be a wonderful culinary experience.
