Saturday 14th August will present you with the opportunity to learn more details about one of the personalities of the Meet our Animals! campaign – the female Aardvark Kvída. At the same time you will have the chance to taste what Kvída likes.  As part of the Day of Insectivores, we have prepared not only a special programme, but also some unusual delicacies!

At selected pavilions you will learn that being an insectivore is not an easy matter and that almost everyone who wants to indulge in a meal of insects had to develop their own hunting strategy. Take chameleons. They catch insects with their sticky tongue which they are able to stick out in a fraction of a second. It is such a high speed that the human eye does not notice the movement until it is going back into the mouth. Archer fish, on the other hand, jump up to catch insects or ‘shoot them down’ with a jet of water. They can hit their prey from as far as two metres away!

The Prague Zoo keepers and guides will provide more information during their special commented feeding shows:

  • 10.00 – African House – feeding of aardvarks
  • 11.00 – Indonesian Jungle – feeding of archer fish
  • 12.00 – Educational Centre – live broadcast of the feeding of amphibians and other animals – large screen projection
  • 13.00 – Beasts of Prey House – feeding of reptiles
  • 14.00 – Big Tortoise House – feeding of the giant chameleon
  • 15.00 – Sichuan – feeding of birds

Insect specialities tasting will be on throughout the day. The menu consists of insect sweets, brown flour bread, crickets on butter or mealworms with chilli peppers. Those who are interested will have the opportunity to watch the preparation of the insect recipes in the Educational Centre of Prague Zoo.
