If you are looking for original presents, do not hesitate and visit the market. It sells hand-made products, each of them an original. The products include Tuareg silver jewellery, textile from Mali and Kenya, clothes and handbags. There are also very high-quality masks and statues made of bronze.

A little unchaste present

One of this year’s hits could be an African unchastity belt. Do not get worried, though, it is nothing lewd. It is an original jewel, which emanates aroma. It is worn by women who want to get the attention of a partner. Women in west Africa used to and still do wear such a jewel, usually under their clothes. The process of making such a jewel is quite complex. It includes charms and a secret recipe for the smell that attracts men.

Baby Jesus is white

Although we know black Madonnas, baby Jesus is white even in Africa. It is usually only little children who get presents. African Christians do not have a Christmas tree but they decorate their houses with palm leaves.

Other exotic origins

Besides African products, the market offers e.g. Egyptian statues or products from South and Central America, for instance a book on the Maya calendar, etc.. When visiting the market, you can also view the permanent exhibition and a temporary exhibition comparing our Christmas and Easter traditions with those in Mexico.
