The Ethiopian also broke his personal record on the track, which was 1:01:12 h. This happened in completely adverse weather. There was a strong wind and only eight Degrees Centigrade at the time of the start. The Ethiopian athlete managed to outrun two Kenyans, who could not keep up with him in the impressive finish.

Women’s record broken, too

Before the race, only true optimists claimed that maybe one record might be broken. Nobody expected that also a new women’s record would be set that day. This time, it was the Kenyan athlete Joyce Chepkirui, with the time of 1:07:02 h. So far, the record had been held by Lydia Cheromei (1:07:33 h) who came second this year.
