People travel around the world to see good architecture and design. There are large cities such as Berlin that can boast a range of interesting buildings by world-famous architects and there are countries like Italy where many architectural features offer an interesting sight. We would like to show that despite the peculiarities of its history, Prague also offers and hopefully will continue to offer even more examples of how to incorporate ‘new’ often atypical, modern, unconventional architecture into what is ‘old’ and nostalgically close to us.

It’s a pleasure to see that, after a long time when architecture and design did not really move forward, the courage of artists and investors has been shifting from ‘typical’ shapes towards more original concepts whether it concerns houses, interior design or maybe just a bottle top. It is good to remind people that we used to be a world-power in the domain of design or if you like ‘decorative art’. Such names as Sutnar, Libenský, Hubáček and many others are still well known all over the world.
The renaissance of quality design, with work coming from young designers and many existing designers as well as newly emerging studios is proof that the new generation is enthusiastic about moving the Czech character towards a better, more sensitive and a more open attitude in this domain, and that they want to target all our senses with their products and designs so that we again learn to appreciate beauty and aesthetics. They want us to discard that what is average, unified, tasteless, that was imposed on us either by the communist regime or that is presently imposed on us by new hypermarkets and cheap design.
Let’s familiarise ourselves with buildings, objects of everyday use and all architecture and design that have been created in the last eighteen years. Let’s get to know the new artists and their visions. We will deliberately focus on the younger generation that has not been encumbered by the past and that has a completely different, more open and maybe a little bit less fearful view on the development of modern artistic endeavor.
Let’s create a virtual footpath through Prague to see various interesting new buildings which will also exist in reality. Let’s see and enjoy quality modern architecture of the 21st century. To assist us, we can use our photo-gallery, multimedia demonstrations and interviews with architects and designers and those who inspired them, presentations of their work and also the comments by our architect Ing. Arch.
Filip Soukup.

Large Buildings, but Energy Saving
The building of the National Technical Library (NTK), which has been erected next to the buildings of high schools in Dejvice within the period when blazing discussions were carried out about another national library, will be put into full operation this year. Its shape and external facade are rather unusual and a lot of people are still getting used to the building that was constructed on a previously overgrown vacant site. The first question for its authors – the Projectil Architectural Studio (Roman Brychta, Adam Halíř, Ondřej Hofmeister and Petr Lešek) – solicits itself:
