The new youngster, born on 8th March, is the 64th giraffe to be born in Prague Zoo. The father, Šimon, is an experienced veteran. This is his 20th offspring. The mother is Kleopatra, who has already given birth eight times. Just out of interest – one of her daughters is Nora who also gave birth on 1st March, bringing another “new” giraffe into the world, the second this year. So, in one week Kleopatra became both a grandmother and a mother. Nora’s young one can already be seen in the large viewing stable. “For the time being Kleopatra’s daughter is still in the maternity stall in the African House. If everything goes well, the public will be able to see the young one sometime around 15th March,” said zoo spokesman Vít Kahle.
How will it go with the cameras?
For the fourth birth this year, which will probably be the last this year, Prague Zoo is preparing a multi-media project – in the stall where the birth will take place three cameras will be installed, two at floor level hidden in the wooden walls of the maternity stall, the third one in the ceiling for a bird’s-eye view. “The project will soon be launched on the websites www.zoopraha.cz and www.tn.cz. It is being carried out in cooperation with TV NOVA and the T-Systems company. It will be accompanied by up-to-date information from the field of giraffe-breeding and competitions for viewers,” said Vít Kahle.
