The fact is that Prague Zoo is among the most frequently visited attractions in the capital city, (if we can call it an attraction) but also in the whole country. Only Prague Castle can compete with its popularity and the current Zoo Director, Petr Fejk, makes no secret of this hope that, one day, the statistics compiled by travel tourism organisations announced that Prague Zoo had broken every record. More than 1 million visitors a year is a really respectable figure. Even if Prague Zoo occupies a wonderful second position in the tourist league table it must be noted that no league table is compiled of people’s favourite places to relax. In this respect the Zoo would certainly be the clear winner.
And who is responsible for the fact that visitors are flocking to Prague Zoo? It’s the staff of the Zoo Park, their ideas, their attitude to people and especially to the animals, because they live well in the Zoo. Even if animals can’t speak, they would surely confirm that they enjoy a good life. But do really we have the right to claim that the animals have a good life? Of course, because there is one absolutely reliable sign: The number of new-born animals that goes up year by year. It’s clear from the christenings, where only the bigger, more endangered animals are christened. The smaller, less endangered animals don’t enjoy this honour but, in all truth, it’s really only a human affair and it can certainly be said that the christenings are rather stressful for the animals.
In our metamorphoses section we will also devote attention to the Zoo Park as it has really changed incredibly. Older residents of Prague can remember cages and bars which have now been replaced by spacious enclosures and glass. They also remember the park being smaller. After all, the bridge over the road that leads to Africa, which spreads across previously unused land, only dates from the beginning of the 21st Century. It isn’t just animals that make the Zoo Park, it’s also people, and maybe we’ll be writing more about them than about the animals.
