The project, led by David Dunstan, from the International Institute for Diabetes Research in Melbourne was carried out on 3781 men and 4576 women who were not sufferers of diabetes. The patients reported how much time they spent watching TV daily. Doctors found out that the longer women watched TV, the higher level of blood sugar they had. However, they didn’t find the same correlation in men. It is possible that other forms of sedentary life may also aggravate the risk of higher level of blood sugar, quoted D. Dunstan.

There are 230 million diabetics in the world at present. In the Czech Republic there are 737 000 registered diabetics, another 50 000 new patients every year are diagnosed. Preconditions for diabetes type two, which is typical for more than 90% of diabetics, are hereditary. Whether the disease evolves or not depends mainly on the intake of high energy food and the degree of physical activity.
