Sorting out of waste has become an ever increasing challenge. Distinguishing between mixed domestic waste, which is incinerated or buried, and sorted waste, which can be recycled, is of ever greater importance. This project, called waste management, was approved by the authorities of Prague City in 1996, and since 1998, there has been a system of sorting domestic waste.

You can sort out:

  • paper and cardboard
  • glass
  • plastics
  • bulk waste
  • mixed waste
  • hazardous waste
  • iron and non-iron metals
  • rubble ( catalogue number of waste: 17 01 02, 17 01 03, 17 01 07)
  • electrical waste
  • garden waste
  • wooden waste
  • organic waste
  • glass
  • food cartons

Different types of collecting bins have been produced for each type of waste; they vary in colour and labelling symbols to distinguish what goes where. You can order the various types of bins by contacting one of the firms above, which also arrange disposal of the waste:

  • grey or black skips – mixed waste
  • green skips – glass
  • blue skips – paper, newspapers, cardboards, cartons
  • black skips with orange lids – beverages cartons
  • yellow skips – plastics (including plastic bags and containers)

A note: It is necessary to flatten the plastic and cardboard waste before throwing it away, so that you can put as much waste as possible in the skips. Otherwise you pay for air disposal.

Organic waste

Apart from this, Prague Town Hall arranges skips for organic waste (leaves from trees, branches…), also skips for large waste from households (old furniture, textiles…), as well as skips for hazardous waste (paints, varnishes, refrigerators, oil, fluorescent lamps, televisions…). All this type of waste can be disposed of at the collection facilities; there is a limit of one cubic meter per a person. You can get rid of used batteries into special skips at collection facilities at some Town Halls.

The costs of waste disposal are managed from the budget of Prague Town Hall and the budgets of the City Districts. Residents share the costs by paying regular fees to the financial department twice a year (15th July and 15th October), Jungmannova 35/29, Prague 1, tel. 236 002 821.
