Since 2007, when it first went into service, the Hermes boat has become very popular among homeless people. Increased demand for accommodation in May and June, i.e. during better weather, is proof of this. Despite the “ideal” weather conditions for homeless people the boat accommodated almost 120 people per night.

The number of foreigners in Prague has been increasing over the last few years. They move here not only from their countries but also from other regions of the Czech Republic, where they sometimes have problems finding a job. Prague, however, does not have a clear conception how to integrate foreigners into society. This is why Prague City Hall commissioned A Survey of the Social Situation of Foreigners in Prague, which mapped most issues that immigrants come across.

Despite objections from Prague 8, the landowner- the City of Prague, helped by the army, want to provide the homeless with emergency shelter.

Due to harsh weather, more and more homeless people come to spend the night on the Hermes. Over the last few days, the boat has been providing shelter on average to 140 people.

This service is provided as a part of Prague Public Transport – microbuses for transporting handicapped people by the company Societa – have expanded their services even outside of area of the capital city.

Approximately 60 clients sleep each night on a Hermes boat during summer, workers from Prague’s Social Services Centre go and see them in the course of their outreach work.
