The six-month statistics show that the number of cases of pickpocketing has dropped, also the cases of crimes against property has been decreasing, mostly the cases of breaking into cars. The number dropped from 33,000 crimes to 29,500. “The decrease in criminality is partially the result of the increase of the number of police officers by 300 and also the camera system, which is a great help for both the Municipal Police and the Police of the CR,” said the Deputy Mayor of Prague Rudolf Blažek.
Violin for half a million CZK saved by camera
Thanks to the camera system, whose development is mostly financed by the City of Prague and individual municipal districts, the criminologists managed to arrest the thief of a violin in the value of 500 thousand CZK. The thief was caught by the camera system selling the violin for 400 CZK. However, the police caught the thief soon after and found the violin as well.
Karlovo náměstí is the next in order
Cameras have also been installed in Karlovo náměstí. Preparation works took place during the summer holidays and now the cameras are connected to the city camera system. “The installation cost 2.5 million CZK paid by the City,” said Rudolf Blažek.
By the end of the year, the square should be monitored by five cameras. Risky spots are chosen by the municipal police in co-operation with the Police of the CR. The reason for the installation of security cameras was that the area was not safe enough as well as the fact that the square has been frequented by drug dealers. Already the first days show that the situation in the square has been improving. Already last year, Prague 2 Town Hall had the trees pruned or cut down in places where drug addicts used drugs to increase the safety of citizens.
