The Orthodox churches derive their origins from the early Christian community in Jerusalem and later on in the eastern part of the Roman Empire, also being called the Eastern Church. The Orthodox churches share the religious teaching and praxis, therefore they are sometimes referred to as the one and only Orthodox Church. Slight differences in the religious praxis and customs may appear among local churches.

The Orthodox Church maintains its apostolic continuity, its teaching was formed primarily by seven ecumenical councils between the fourth and eighth century. Towards the end of the first millennium, there gradually tension grew between the eastern and western churches which resulted in the great schism (1054), it has not been overcome yet. The teaching of the Orthodox Church is in some aspects quite close to the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church and the two churches continue to lead a dialogue on this topic. The great schism was supported by the development of the catechism of the Roman Catholic Church during the second century. All these new dogmas, agreed on by the western church after the year 1054, are incompatible with the orthodox teaching and together with a different Roman Catholic spirituality, prevents the unification of the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church.

The Orthodox Church has the second largest number of supporters after the Roman Catholic Church. Greece, Russia and other Slavic lands are the strongholds Orthodoxy. The Orthodox believers are originally immigrants but they live in many other countries. Large communities exist in the USA, Canada or Australia.
