The construction of the reservoir started in 1965 and up to the present time, its extent is fascinating: it is 38 km long and those who would like to walk around it would have to cover 150 km. Želivka serves as a drinking water reservoir for Prague. Water is transported through a tunnel conduit, just as it is transported to Central Bohemia Region and Czech-Moravian Highlands Region.

A water treatment plant is a part of the closely watched area. This year, the plant went through renovation. The technology of ozonization allows for water health safety (ozone kills protozoa, bacteries and unlike chlorine, it is able to get rid of viruses).
