Other often over looked sites are the Vernicular and the Prague Zoo. The Vernicular involves a train or tram trip to the top of the mountain over looking Prague and a chance to take some pictures, have dinner or beverage, and enjoy a panoramic view of the city. My favorite time to go is in the evening when you can see all the sites under the lights as well as the city skyline.
The Zoo in Prague is one of the best in the world and offers visitors a chance to get up close to animals who are presented in the most natural of environments. Children can easily get up close to animals in a safe way. This is especially a good afternoon for kids who may get bored with looking at historical areas and buildings.
National Theatre
A walk along the Vltava also affords the visitor a chance to see the building called “the dancing lady” and Narodni Divaldo or National Theater. There are regular productions including opera and ballet at the National Theater. The Theater is beautiful complete with gold brocade boxes and great acoustics. The Theater has been built and maintained through public donations and gifts and is the pride of most Praguers. A perfect conclusion to an evening at the theater is to have coffee or a beer across the street where Vaclav Havel a write and President of the Republic after the demise of the Communist Regime planned the Velvet Revolution which resulted in the current system of government. Dress for the National Theater can be about anything but regular visitors appreciate guests who wear at least kaki pants and a blazer. My favorite shows are ballet and dance which are presented by some of the best talent in the Czech Republic always with fantastic music presented by a full orchestra. I have also attended several special presentations by small string groups in some of the churches or small cathedrals these present an opportunity to see some of the old art works ceiling frescas etc that are not a part of regular tours.
My best time in Prague
One of my favorite visits was at a PhD recital presented by a student at her recital presented for her Degree. She and her fiancée sang several songs including a presentation for Romeo and Juliet. Before the concert she presented flowers to her mother and grandmother as an appreciation for their support. I attended this with a professor from the Faculty as his guest and had a delightful time. His English was limited and my Czech was non existent but we communicated through our appreciate of music and the “joy” of the time. He was a faculty member in Physical Education whose father had been a professor and remove by the Russians during the occupation. It was a highlight of my visit.
