The academy
The Czech Academy of Agricultural Sciences (ČAZV) is an advisory body to the Minister of Agriculture of the Czech Republic. It co-creates the research and development strategies of the agriculture, forestry, water management, and food industries. It also evaluates research results and publishes 11 scientific journals.
The Academy’s building
The Academy is housed in a historic building with a red façade on the corner of Římská, Blanická and Slezská Street. It was designed by Czech architect Josef Gočár and it is referred to as ‘Dům zemědělské osvěty’, which means the House of Agricultural Education.
The fact that the building was designed for agriculture is obvious from the entrance, where there are reliefs with grain motifs above the main door. In other places, you can find motifs of hops and grapevines.
During the Open Day, a large conference hall will be open to public, with an exhibition of historical materials, a demonstration of scientific journals and collections, as well as entertaining quizzes and activities for children. The newly reconstructed Antonín Švehla Library, the third largest agricultural library in the world, will be also accessible to the public. A highlight of the event will be the exceptional view of the Czech capital from the terrace of the building, where bee hives are kept.
