The exhibition, entitled ‘Poznej světové dědictví UNESCO’ (Learn UNESCO World Heritage), is part of a long-term project of the same name, which was founded by the journalist Milena Blažková. The continuously changing exhibition has travelled around selected Czech towns since 2003, with the aim of providing as much information as possible about the uniqueness of places registered on the prestigious World Heritage List.

Chocolate Hills

Each year the exhibition introduces new sites. In the Municipal Library’s main building, you can now learn about selected treasures of India, Sri Lanka, Japan, and some Southeast Asian countries. For example, one of the photos will show you the Chocolate Hills on the Philippine island of Bohol, which are spread over fifty square kilometres between Carmen, Batuan and Sagbayan. No wonder they are on the Bohol flag. They are one of the most beautiful sights in the Philippines and whoever sees them in person would share the belief that it could be one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Sacred Bridge over Daija River

The next slide takes you to the holiest and most visited place in Japan - Nikkō. The photographer's lens captures the vermilion lacquered Shinkyō (the Sacred Bridge), which runs across the Daija River. According to legend, the bridge stands on the site which was crossed by the priest Shōdō Shōnin during his pilgrimage to the sacred mountain of Nantai in the year 766, as two great snakes transformed to create a bridge for him and his monks. He is spoken of as founder of the oldest local temples.

Prambanan Temple Complex

Prambanan, the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia, which was built in the 10th century, is also under the protection of UNSECO.  Several temples, with one central temple, which is nearly 50 meters high, are concentrated here. The three local temples are decorated with bas-reliefs with motifs from the Hindu epic of Ramayana and are dedicated to the supreme Hindu gods Shiva, Vishnu and Rama. Three more shrines are dedicated to the animals that served the gods.

UNESCO World Heritage

If a landmark or natural area gets on the World Cultural and Natural List heritage, it gains the highest possible mark of quality and originality. To receive this certification, however, is not easy at all. Nominated sites have to meet a wide range of criteria; they must submit extensive documentation and defend their claim in case of unannounced visits of UNESCO inspectors. Italy, Spain, Germany, China and India have the greatest numbers of listed sites. The Czech Republic has twelve places on this prestigious list, and the historical centre of Prague is among them.
