David Nesta Marley is the real name of the legendary Bob Marley’s eldest son. His nickname Ziggy comes from Jamaican and means ‘little spliff’.

Thanks to his father, music was part of his life since his childhood. After the death of his father, he and his siblings founded a successful group The Melody Makers. In 2013, he started his solo career. In music, he primarily works alone, but he has collaborated with many big stars like Paul Simon, Sting and Dona Summer. His music has also appeared in many films and documentaries.

More than a musician

Ziggy Marley is a versatile artist. His work not only includes music, but also an illustrated children’s book, a cookbook, organic food production, and ‘Marijuanaman’ comics. He is also invested in philanthropy. With the conviction that children are an unlimited source for our future and that by providing for them we become more enlightened, he founded the URGE Foundation with his wife, helping children in need in Jamaica, Africa and other places. It also cooperates with the UN and the music education NGO Little Kids Rock.

His social activities also include nature conservation. This is reflected in the lyrics of his songs. He says that he draws inspiration from everything - “from the whole universe, humanity, love and places I don't even know where to find”.

Ziggy’s latest album

His latest studio album, ‘Rebellion Rises’, was released last year under Marley's record label Tuff Gong Worldwide and was nominated for a Grammy Award. “All rebellion has an origin in the human mind, in melody and music. Rebellion is consciousness. Once we realise its potential and our own awareness starts spreading, we will also grow,” Ziggy Marley comments on his message.
