On the 16th of November 2010, UNESCO declared flamenco one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity and this day was declared International Flamenco Day.

The festival will be held in the Czech Republic for the fifth time, and once again the festival programme will be rich with many different events.

Remembering Gades

This year is the fifteenth anniversary of the death of the legend Antonio Gades, flamenco dancer and choreographer, who became world famous thanks to Carlos Saura's dance films, including ‘Bloody Wedding’, ‘Carmen’ and ‘Wedded by Witchcraft’. The festival will commemorate this artist by screening a documentary that is devoted to Gades and his work, and two dance performances which pay tribute to the greatest male flamenco dancer.

Tributes to Gades

Yaoquín Grilo, a contemporary dance star and male flamenco icon, is the main star this year. He dances with Gades's style and charisma and pays homage to the flamenco master. Another tribute to Gades will be Alfonso Losa’s performance called ‘Legado’, meaning ‘Heritage’. The dance evening will be dedicated to Gades, who connected the traditional concept of flamenco dancing with the elegance of ballet.

You can also sing

Singers will also bring the Spanish rhythms of wild flamenco to festival goers in Prague. In true Catalan fashion, Pedro El Granaíno shares his innermost emotions with his listeners.

A programme to make Prague dance

The rich festival programme includes a variety of events, such as dance workshops with Spanish instructors, discussions about flamenco, and open sessions in Czech flamenco dance schools.
