'Watch your step, the sacred places are everywhere you touch the ground'. These are a poet’s words which are a good description of Prague as a place of archaeological discoveries. Every building activity taking place on Prague’s territory is supervised by archaeologists and each of them brings something new, a new insight into the life of Prague.
Some might say that there isn’t anything new to discover, but this is not true. The latest and hitherto the biggest archaeological excavation brought many surprises. This research was brought about by the conversion of George of Podiebrad barracks, located on Náměstí Republiky, into a shopping centre. The results of researchers were processed and kept in the Prague Museum; here essential parts of archaeological discoveries are shown to the public, either in fixed or temporary exhibitions. On top of that, there are also millions of small artefacts in depositories, which help researchers to shed light on the history of the city.
