Czech treats, such as ‘pardubický perník’ (Pardubice ginger bread), ‘štramberské uši’ (Štramberk Ears - cone-shaped gingerbread cookies), ‘hořické trubičky’ (Hořice Tubes) and beer brewed in Strahov Monastery, alongside specialities from other European regions, e.g. Austrian herbal drinks, Romanian wine, Dutch waffles with cheese and sweet Belgian ones with chocolate… all this and more is on offer at the festival A Taste of Europe, an accompanying event to the Summit of EU Regions. Yet, it is not only a delicatessen festival, it is a musical event as well. On Thursday, before the opening ceremony, several folk groups presented themselves, as well as the singer Iva Frühlingová.
Musical performances were followed by a welcoming speech by the President of the Committee of the Regions, Luc Van den Brande and the Mayor of Prague, Pavel Bém, who is the committee’s Vice-President.“I am pleased to be in Prague, which is a truly beautiful and golden city,” said Van den Brande. After a short speech, the two politicians visited some of the stalls, tasted some Romanian wine…however, they spent the most time at the Prague 6 stall with local beer. Naturally, Van den Brande enjoyed the beer as he himself comes from a country where beer could be called a national drink.
The Prague 1 stall offers not only first class smoked meats prepared by its trader of the year but it also advertises another two spring events which will take place in March and April. This Saturday, a fairy-tale, some singing and even aerobics will be presented for children on a stage in Na Příkopě Street. At the end of the month, on the 28th and the 29th of March, the Prague 1 Days will be inspired by the times of Rudolph II. And, of course, Prague 1 will celebrate Easter as well.
