“The city bypass is at present the biggest and the most important transportation construction, which, when finished, will significantly affect the whole transportation system in Prague and will make the life of thousand of Praguers easier,” says the Mayor of Prague Pavel Bém and adds: “The construction of a big ring road had already been discussed before World War II. However, it was not approved until 1963 and the construction itself did not start until the 1980’s.”
The southern part of the city bypass will shorten the route from D1 motorway to Brno to D5 motorway to Pilsen. The drive will thus take 19 minutes compared to up to an hour at the present time. The road is also important for those who drive to the airport as confirms Stanislav Zeman from Prague Airport: “For us it means some 100 000 passengers a year, who would otherwise choose to travel from Vienna or Bratislava.”
What is more, the whole Prague Ring Road will have new signposts fitted with destination Airport. “From now on, drivers will enter the ring road before Prague and the navigation system will quickly and easily lead them to Prague Ruzyně entrance,” adds Martina Vápeníková, the press agent for the Road and Motorway Directorate.
