The PPTC has prepared a safety campaign in which it draws passengers’ attention to risks of injuries when getting on and off trams. The company thus responds to personal injuries that have happened to passengers when trying to catch a tram.

Beware of the warning signal

“Unfortunately, people often do not realize the risk when they are getting on a tram while the warning signal is already on. Many even try to get on trams when the doors are closing and thus also violate the conditions of transport. When people try to prevent doors from closing, using their hands or legs or various objects, they can end up with nasty arm injuries or in the worse case the passenger can get caught in the door. Our campaign on the doors of the vehicles should draw people’s attention to these risks,“ said Petr Hloch, head of the Operation of Trams unit.

Unnecessary injuries

Getting on and off trams when the warning signal warns passengers that the doors are about to close, is identified as potentially the most risky situation during which an injury can and does occur. In 2013, the PPTC registered six such injuries and the number has slightly increased this year.

Trams KT and T6

By means of visuals on the doors of 20 trams of the KT and T6 type, where the injuries are most frequent, the campaign wants to remind passengers of the risks when running to catch a tram or when they are getting on or off the tram and the warning signal is already on. Passengers will also be given the name of a website, where they can find simple rules for getting on and off trams.

Selection of basic rules for passengers:

  • Passengers should get on and off in time. When the warning sign and the warning signal are on, they mustn’t enter the area of the door.
  • Passengers getting off the tram have priority over those who are getting on and there should be enough room in front of the door for passengers to get off.
  • After having got on or off the tram, i.e. when the warning sign and signal are on, passengers must not put their legs, arms or other objects that might get caught in the door, since it might cause somebody to fall when the tram starts moving and subsequently cause an injury to the passenger.
