At the start of each year, there are long queues for Prague Integrated Transport (PID) tickets. Yet there’s no need to queue if you have an electronic Opencard. Everything can be arranged via the Internet from the comfort of your home.

Places that sell PID season tickets have difficulties dealing with the sudden flow of people, as most people buy their tickets at the last minute.

“Opencard holders do not have to queue at all. All they need to do is make use of the Prague Public Transit Company’s e-shop, where they can buy yearly tickets as well as other PID season tickets. All this can be done on a computer without any unnecessary waiting,” says the spokesperson for Opencard, Martin Opatrný.

Buying a ticket on-line (http://eshop.dpp.cz) is easy. All you need to do is fill in the Opencard number, choose the type of the ticket (e.g. yearly) and choose the mode of payment. Payment can be made by bank transfer or via a payment card. Two days later, which is the time needed for the money transfer to happen, tickets are ready to be collected at any validator placed in the metro. All you need to do is insert your opencard into the machine, which will record the data on the card in about twenty seconds. The whole purchase does not take more than ten minutes. You can also use this method to buy a ticket for someone as a present but you need to know the person’s Opencard number.

Every month, an average of 3.5 thousand people change from prepaid paper tickets to electronic tickets. The most frequently bought tickets are the 360-day tickets that start on the day of your choice. One fifth of all the PID pre-paid ticket holders use Opencards.

“I think that people realize that the electronic ticket on the Opencard has a number of advantages. People do not have to queue to buy the tickets and do not lose their money if they lose the card. All the data on the card, i.e. all the tickets, money for parking, library cards etc can be recorded on a new card again,” added Mr. Opatrný.
