The piece was made by sculptor Oldřicha Mayera in 1709. “Saints Cosmas and Damian were patrons of doctors. The inscription describes Cosmas as a Hippocrates among saints, and Damian as Galen of the sky. The traditionally interpreted figures are wearing gowns and their heads are covered with university master’s caps. They hold vessels containing medicine and martyr’s palms. In the middle stands Jesus the Saviour called Salvator – healer of the world,” Petra Hoftichová describes the sculptures from City Prague Gallery, which is in charge of public sculptures.
Because the pedestal is seriously damaged, Prague City Gallery, in cooperation with bodies in charge of monument preservation, decided to dismantle the sculpture group. The pedestal will be replaced by a replica created by architect and conservator Jiří Kačer. “After the figural part undergoes detail research, it will be renovated and returned to its original location. The place where it stands, the railing under Lesser Town bridge’s towers, will be empty for about two years,” said Petra Hoftichová. Dismantling of the sculpture group should be finished within fourteen days time. Prague Town Hall and Charles Bridge Artists' Association will participate on this demanding job.
