The river bank has always primarily served river traffic; nowadays it is partly a harbour, partly an oasis ideal for pleasant walks. From 1st May the river bank under Rašínovo embankment will have another attraction – its own flea market, which will take place between Palackého náměstí and Výtoň on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month. It will be a smaller version of the flea market that Prague people know from Náměstí Míru. This will continue to take place, irrespective of the river bank event, on the last Saturday of each month.

What will be on sale?

In Náměstí Míru the rule stands that items on sale at a flea market should only comprise of things that have served their time in one household, but may still bring joy to another. A flea market trader is not allowed to sell mass-produced goods etc. The organisers would welcome second-hand books, vinyl records and other similar retro-products.

“Interest in livening up the river bank was expressed by the council of Prague 2 last year, but a contract with the company administering the site was only signed in April this year,” said one of the organisers, David Košek.

Karlín cancelled

The organisers have also informed us that, until further notice, the flea market in Šipkárna hall in Karlín will not take place. “Incidentally, after six months we have found out why the hall in Karlín is known as Šipkárna. Local historians explained to us that during WWI the hall was probably used for production of steel darts (šipky) as weaponry for planes at that time,” explained Košek.
