Last year, the zoo concentrated on the spirit of enrichment - that is the diversity of animals and the stimulation of their natural behaviour. The project’s slogan, ‘Animals at Ease’ (Czech ‘Zvířata v pohodě’), was reflected by various activities in the zoo, as well as by media content and advertisements. During this project, visitors could learn about various puzzles and toys for animals, and participate in creating versions of these toys in workshops. The activities from last year will continue, as they prove to be very popular, along with this year’s theme of ‘Animal Days’.

January for zebras

The first month of the year is dedicated to zebras, a species endangered by poaching and drought. Maneless zebras and Grévy’s zebras are the two kinds of zebras in Prague Zoo. In January, you will have the opportunity to learn a lot about these unique animals, such as how to distinguish various zebra breeds from their stripes.

Zebras usually live in herds with one stallion, and between one and five mares with their young. Steppe zebras are composed of huge herds that migrate.

Celebrate zebras on the 25th of January

There will be special commented meetings at the Maneless zebra’s enclosure every weekend in January. They will be on at 10:30 am and 1:30 pm in Czech and at 11 am and 2 pm in English every Saturday and Sunday. The biggest celebration will take place on Saturday, the 25th of January. Anyone who comes dressed as a zebra and takes part in a group photo will receive a special gift.

Throughout the day, visitors can look forward to discussions about zebras, a walk through the zoo, face-painting and art workshops to make zebra masks. A crucial vote will also take place: are zebras white with black stripes or black with white stripes?

2020 Animal Days Calendar

Prague Zoo has published an Animal Days calendar for the year 2020, with illustrations of the twelve animals selected for the year. Young artists have illustrated the specimens, and the animals’ own names and the names of the species are also included.
