The original building is the botanical garden’s pride and joy, with an S-shaped path and an area of 1,750 square metres. It is embedded into the Troja hillside’s sunny southern slope and was opened in June 2004.This is the first time the greenhouse was closed to the public for a long period of time.
New additions
However, time did not stop in the greenhouse and workers were busy during the closure. “We made several significant planting interventions. Visitors will discover rare plant species that were recently planted during their walk through the greenhouse.” Bohumil Černý, the garden director, said.
You can enjoy the valuable Mexican succulent Calibanus hookeri in the succulent area, which has extremely narrow grey-green leaves that look like a grass fountain. For the first time, you can admire an unusual Beiselia mexicana tree, whose trunk has an interesting surface.
In bloom
Fata Morgana’s centre is just as exciting. Near the observation deck the Strongylodon macrobotrys, commonly known as jade vine, attracts attention with its unusual turquoise blossoms. However, it is not the only flower worth seeing in that part of the greenhouse. The Thunbergia mysorensis plant is also in bloom, and the rare Aristolochia arborea’s unusual flowers near the waterfall call for your attention. Lovers of orchids, ground pines, and ferns have a lot to enjoy.
