KvětaPacovská is a painter, sculptor, illustrator, graphic artist, typographer and teacher. Thanks to her original book illustrations, she became one of the world’s most famous illustrators.
Her illustrations are unique and unmistakable. They express a sense of playfulness, experiment and wit, and they are full of artistic and typographic fantasy.
Pacovská holds numerous international awards for her work. In 1992, she was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Award, the most important international award for authors and illustrators of children’s books.
Important, yet lesser known works
In 2015, Prague City Gallery organised a retrospective exhibition of Květa Pacovská’s works in the Municipal Library. However, the concept of the exhibition did not include her early works from the 1960s and 1970s.
Thus, this time, the exhibition focuses on her early works, which are almost unknown, yet very important. At the time, her work was devoted to free graphics and objects made of paper and metal. Prints and small statues from this period form an extremely comprehensive collection, which contains the artistic principles that the artist still follows and in her later work, where she continues to develop most significantly by her use of colours.
Pacovská’s collection of black-and-white prints was only exhibited once before, along with metal prints and illustrations, in Hollar, Prague in 1971.
