The exhibition was created as a separate unit in the 1990s, but peonies were planted in the garden even earlier. The Peony Meadow was opened to the public in 2011.
The meadow is near the garden’s north entrance. The exhibition is artfully complemented with a set of themed wooden sculptures, called ‘Four Seasons’ by the artist Adriana Skálová.
There are over 500 species in this unique collection of peonies, making it one of the best European collections.
Peonies (Paeonia) are herbaceous perennial plants and woody shrubs from the peony family of flowering plants, Paeoniaceae, consisting of a single genus. Peonies naturally occur in temperate and cold areas in the northern hemisphere, especially in the Mediterranean, the Caucasus and China. The Latin name, Paeonia, comes from Paean, the physician of gods in Greek mythology.
